The work on the new International Airport at Devanahalli, on the outskirts of the City is progressing in full swing. The much delayed and debated greenfield airport, which is 35 kms away from the City off the NH7, is expected to be operational by April 2008. At the airport location, sheds have been built to accommodate 3,000 construction workers and over 900 of them are already on the site, and are working on the project since the first week of July. The authorities are planning to speed up the process. A barrier has been put up on the link road that local villagers use.
As a first priority, authorities have started the work on a four km long runway.
The entire length of the runway has been marked and leveling work is in full swing. The single runway in the first phase of the project will cater to all existing configuration of the air craft. The second runway, to be taken up as part of the second phase will be able to take bigger and heavier aircraft. Pre-cast concrete slabs are being fabricated to erect a compound wall and a testing laboratory has been constructed at the site, so that all material used are pre-tested. The state-of-the art airport, which will be able to accommodate a number of national and international airlines will be further expanded in the second phase. In the second phase, a second terminal will come up along with an apron, second runway and a taxiway. The new airport will also spur lot of economic activities in that part of the City. The Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) is planning an Airport City near the airport for non aviation activities. That will house, a number of business centres, restaurants, hotels and other related businesses. The revenue generated from these centres will help the BIAL to lower user tariffs.
However, ground work to create infrastructure to reach the airport is on at very slow pace. Given the kind of traffic congestion in the city, it will take many hours to reach the airport from Majestic and southern parts of the City. Taking note to this problem, the State Government has worked out a plan to improve the situation. The Government plans a six lane National Highway from Hebbal flyover, with road over bridges across two level crossings and a trumpet shaped interchange for unhindered flow into the airport. Unfortunately, the Railways plan to have a dedicated twin line between Cantonment Railway Station to Devanahalli Airport where passengers can check in at the railway station itself is not part of Phase I of the project.
