     METAL WORKS
    BALUSTRADES

Baluster is vertical member supporting a stair rail or a parapet coping. Balustrade is a series of such pillars connected by a rail or a coping. They could be purely functional or ornamental.
Most commonly used materials are a. Wood b. Metals c. Stones d. Concrete.
Woods: Favoured one is Teak, imported woods taking certain share of market today. Readymade wood balusters of a wide range in size and shape are available in the market. They can be made to order to the desired design.
Metals: Mild Steel, Cast Iron, Brass, Stainless Steel are few materials used in balusters, Mild Steel and Brass balusters are available in Rolled Sections such as circular hollow sections plain or profiled. They are also in the form of plain, twisted and with decorative attachments. Attachments could be of stamped MS or Cast Iron profiles in the form of floral leaves or buckets.

Window treatment is finding an important role in interiors today. Aesthetic is in decorating windows with curtains, swags, valances, cascades, rosette, draperies and the like. Introduction of these decorative features has pushed back conventional painted and polished wooden pelmets. Drapery / curtain rods have made a comeback. The decorative, functional and strong rods are style of the day.

Most commonly used materials for drapery / curtain rods are mildsteel, brass, copper and wood, in a range of finishes. The matching finials, rings and hooks be it metal or plastics are very much required along with these rods. Generally these accessories are supplied by rod manufacturers. Other accessories to be considered are mounts, brackets and couplers.

Mild Steel: Rods or tubes of various profiles are used. Tubes are either chrome plated or come with decorative P.V.C. sleeve. At times they are powder coated and finished glossy, lustre or matt in various colours. The accessories in brass or copper add richness. Brass and copper: Tube of both these materials are used. They are finished to their natural colours with a lustre or gloss.

Cast Iron: These are normally in intricate designs, which are difficult to achieve in MS, being very ornamental the have very high aesthetic value. Their ability to withstand weathering makes them best choice for an extermal application. Because of their aesthetic appeal they have their own place in interiors also.
Stones: Marble balusters are favoured ones granite following it. They are available in natural finish as well as mirror polished surfaces.
Finishes: MS balusters could be enamel painted, powder coated or chromed. Cast Iron could be painted, powder coated or left to its natural colour. Concrete is either painted with cement-based paint or acrylic-based paint for life. Stones are left to their natural finished surface.
Tips: Align railings after wall or edge plaster is done for reference or the alignment could go wrong. If stones are used for stair finish, drill holes in to the flooring material and insert them over the bolts left over the steps. A small piece at the edge of the step beyond the baluster will be an ugly sight. Try to use pre-finished flooring material on the steps as finishing steps will be very difficult.

     WINDOW DRESSING
     CURTAIN RODS

Chemical treatments and coatings ensure finishes last. Some manufacturers guarantee this.
Wood: Introduction of wood substitutes have hardly replaced it in this use. The richness imparted by wood can not be replaced. Turned and finished on CNC machines then sprayed with melamine for tough wear resistance ensure wood retains its place.
Each of these materials add value to the function and aesthetics of curtain rods. Used in combination of these exploits the potential of each material.

    Tips:
Look out for the variety of combination of finials, rings and hooks.
Due attention needs to be given to hold backs, knob hold backs, tassels and the like. Ensure firm anchoring of brackets, mounts and couplers for safety.
