When built, at 110 floors, the twin towers were the tallest buildings in the world. Chicago's Sears Tower soon usurped the title in 1974, but the building stood as a Big Apple landmark.
Situated on a 16 acre site, the Trade Center houses, apart from hundreds of offices, stores, restaurants and hotels, a daytime home to more than 50,000 workers.
